SMB Tattoo Studio Brighton

Can you tell us the story behind SMB Tattoo, how it started and what makes it unique in Brighton’s ink scene?

Our tattoo studio is completely unique;  we draw inspiration from Brighton’s vibrant street art and music culture. It’s the city’s only tattoo studio proudly centred around hip-hop and graffiti. SMB was founded 10 years ago by my partner Tom Sorn. Three years ago I left my corporate job of 15 years and joined forces with him to expand the studio, becoming co-owner and studio manager, which is the best decision I’ve ever made. I come to work every day THE happiest with the most grateful heart, excited to meet our clients and work alongside such amazing talent.

What’s the creative ethos or artistic direction that SMB Tattoo prioritises?

We have 14 incredibly talented resident artists and a plethora of guest artists specialising in a diverse range of tattoo styles, including classic black and grey portraits, gothic blackwork, and custom lettering to the bold and traditional. Utilising ink, spray paint, calligraphy brushwork and various mark-making techniques, SMB is known for its high-quality work with detailed painterly and edgy textures.

How do you balance custom work with flash offerings, especially at pop-up events or festivals?

The flash days and pop-up events are an amazing opportunity for new clients to visit SMB Tattoo, meet our wonderful team, get a super-cool tattoo at a fantastic price and enjoy the good vibes of our community. This initial meeting usually means that these clients become regulars and we build a long-term tattoo relationship with them for their custom work and ongoing projects. We have clients travelling from all over the word to get tattooed here!

How would you describe the local tattoo culture in Brighton and how SMB contributes to it?

Brighton’s tattoo culture is buzzing and eclectic! We are privileged enough to have our studio in the heart of one of the most dynamic and creative places in the world and the tattoo studios in this city truly embody this, especially SMB Tattoo.
