Unbothered at Christmas

28 Nov, 2025

A Guide to protecting your peace

The Christmas season can be a magical time – lights, mulled wine, and the promise of slowing down and celebrating with family and friends. But for many of us, it can also be a whirlwind of social pressure, financial strain and emotional exhaustion. Between family tensions, endless to-do lists and curated Christmas perfection on social media, it’s easy to lose your calm. Read on to learn how to remain unbothered this festive season.

Redefine what Christmas means to you

Start by deciding what you want from the season, not what tradition, advertising or relatives dictate. Maybe that’s quiet evenings with friends instead of elaborate parties, or giving experiences instead of gifts. Once you’ve defined your version of Christmas, every decision becomes simpler: if it doesn’t align with your vision, it’s a polite “no”.

Protect your energy

Your time and attention are precious currencies. Schedule downtime like you would social events. Give yourself permission to leave early, skip the drama or stay at home. You don’t owe anyone your emotional labour just because it’s December. Boundaries aren’t rude, they’re radical self-care.

Keep comparison in check

Social media can amplify feelings of inadequacy – you know those feeds with the perfect tree, perfect partner (god forbid matching PJs, each to their own) perfect life. Remember: people post highlights, not realities. Instead of scrolling, immerse yourself in something real, such as a winter beach walk, a good book or baking in the kitchen (wine encouraged).

Simplify gift-giving

Financial stress is one of Christmas’s biggest energy drains. Set a budget and stick to it. Handmade, second-hand or experience-based gifts often mean more than expensive ones. ‘Presence over presents’ is the mantra for staying unbothered.

Ground yourself in gratitude

It may sound like a cliché now, but when chaos creeps in, pause. Breathe. Focus on one thing you’re genuinely grateful for – a warm home, a kind word or even just a quiet moment. Gratitude turns the noise down and brings peace back into focus. Stay in the moment without worrying about what lies ahead or the things you don’t have.

Everyone’s idea of Christmas is different and remember you aren’t required to fit into a corporate mould. Christmas is beautiful when you make it unapologetically yours – and we hope you have an amazing one.
