Brighton’s best matcha lattes

Meet your matcha. Brighton’s best matcha lattes

Matcha has officially gone from niche wellness drink to full-blown cultural phenomenon. Once reserved for traditional Japanese tea ceremonies and the occasional health food café, the vivid green powder is now everywhere, from iced strawberry matchas flooding TikTok feeds to ceremonial-grade lattes served in Brighton’s coolest coffee spots.

The rise comes partly from its reputation as a calmer caffeine alternative to coffee, offering a slower energy release without the jittery crash, but also because it looks undeniably good on social media.

Searches for ceremonial matcha and matcha-based drinks have surged globally in the past year, with cafés across the UK leaning heavily into the trend.

With myriad health benefits, it’s understandable how this once mystical green powder has become a daily staple for many. Naturally high in antioxidants, matcha is thought to protect your liver and boost brain function. It may also help protect the heart and aid with weight loss when paired with a healthy diet and exercise.

Brighton & Hove, naturally, has embraced matcha with open arms. The city’s independent coffee scene and wellness culture make it the perfect breeding ground for beautifully whisked oat milk lattes in aesthetically pleasing colours. But where to find this magical elixir?

One of the city’s standout spots is Granny’s Cafe on Ship Street. It’s become something of a cult favourite for people serious about their matcha. Over in Kemptown, The Milk Shed Coffee Roasters serves expertly crafted drinks with a quieter neighbourhood feel, while Good As Gold on Trafalgar Street is slowly building a loyal following for their aesthetic cloud matcha.

If you’re in the Lanes, Neeko Speciality Coffee, Cakes and Matcha is ideal for a sweeter, indulgent version paired with one of their famously good bakes, while Symva Coffee Roasters in Hove offers a more refined speciality coffee approach. Another Hove gem is Spro, serving matcha lattes and good vibes. For people wanting a relaxed brunch with their green fix, Moksha and Starfish & Coffee both deliver excellent matcha alongside Brighton’s classic laid-back café atmosphere.

It’s safe to say the matcha obsession is here to stay and we are all in.
