Pre-theatre dinner at Redroaster

This month’s food review took me to vibrant New Road in the heart of the city – a bustling hub of bars, boutique shops and iconic cultural venues including Brighton Dome and the Grade II-listed Theatre Royal Brighton. The area buzzes with street performers, theatre-goers and tourists soaking up Brighton’s hedonistic energy on lively spring and summer evenings, and is undoubtedly one of my favorite parts of the city.

Perfectly positioned for a pre-show dinner, you will find Redroaster Brighton Dome. The venue offers pre-theatre dining from 16:00 daily, making it an ideal stop before heading to a performance nearby. The interior feels intimate and cosy, with low lighting, comfortable seating and genuinely friendly service creating a relaxed atmosphere away from the crowds outside. On warmer days, you can sit outside and people watch to your heart’s content.

The express menu offers two courses for £25 or three for £30, and naturally we opted for the full three-course experience: prawn cocktail, Wagyu rump steak frites with peppercorn sauce, followed by chocolate mousse. The prawn cocktail was an elevated take on the retro classic. Plump king prawns arrived on a bed of cold, crunchy lettuce, coated in a creamy Marie Rose sauce dusted generously with paprika, alongside crisp garlic toast and a warm lemon wedge for squeezing. Always a firm favourite of mine and this definitely didn’t disappoint.

The Wagyu rump steak arrived beautifully medium rare and ready sliced beneath a rich peppercorn and mushroom sauce. The meat was tender enough to melt in the mouth, while the crispy fries were ideal for soaking up every last bit of sauce. Super indulgent without being overly heavy, exactly what you want before an evening at the theatre.

Dessert was a decadent dark chocolate mousse topped with a sprinkle of sea salt, balancing richness with just enough sharpness.

Some meals simply leave you happier than when you arrived, and this was undoubtedly one of them. Theatre tickets or not, I’ll definitely be returning for more of the same and urge you to do so too.
