One of Britain’s best loved bands celebrate their 50th anniversary this year and to celebrate they will be performing their hits and unearthing some rare gems. Songwriters Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook began working together in 1974 and recruited keyboard player Jools Holland and drummer Paul Gunn soon after. Their first EP and most of their debut album, released in 1978, was produced by John Cale from the Velvet Underground, whose 1973 album,
Squeeze, provided inspiration for the band’s name. They enjoyed many hits in the years that followed including Cool For Cats, Up the Junction and Pulling Mussels (from the Shell), which gained the band an audience in America. Holland left in 1980 but the band continued to record and tour. Tillbrook has recently become an Ambassador for the anti-poverty charity, the Trussell Trust and the band are asking their fans to bring food donations to the show.
